The user visits MyNewTW, is prompted for permission, and is asked for access to their public tree, /public/TiddlyWiki/MyNewTW. Then, is created, we check DNS until it exists, and then present the link to the user. We can have them choose a type of public TW edition, pick a subdomain, fill out a name, whatever we want to gather. The user chooses “new public” → a new Fission app is created / published on behalf of the current user. Saves are written directly to that file path by the saver. It is available on other devices and synced there when they are logged in. It is only visible to them and only when they are logged in.

The app is like TiddlyDesktop – the next step is to launch or create a new TW. The user signs in / grants permission to the app to write to their file system, The landing page displays a TW and describes what it is, and has a big “Sign in with Fission” button. This is a continuation talking about how to structure a TiddlyWiki app, saver, syncer, etc.

I’ll be disappointed if this turns out being too good to be true, but so far it’s the best solution I’ve found for editing and managing local TiddlyWiki files on my Mac.I’ve created a background diagram on apps and the user file system – comments are enabled, also embedded below: WebDAVNav barely even shows up in Activity Monitor, which is something I couldn’t say when I had to run an instance of Firefox or Chrome for editing. And it requires running a separate app (the WebDAV server), but it’s in the background and not used for actually editing the wiki.

This morning, I stumbled upon this thread in the TiddlyWiki Google Group. I just want to manage my wiki, a local file, from a pinned tab in Safari without too much hassle. There is an app, TiddlyDesktop that works well, but still requires that I run a separate app just for editing my wiki.

Separate files may be desirable for some, but I prefer the single-file configuration. It means the wiki must be broken up into individual tiddler files and requires installing and running Node/NPM/etc. This works with any browser, and can even allow it to run on a server, but it complicates things. For Chrome and Firefox, there’s the Timimi browser extension.Īnother option is to run the wiki via Node.js. There are a dozen ways to manage this, but none of them are ideal for me since I use Safari. But, making edits in a browser and then saving those changes presents a problem. It’s permanent, portable, and about as future-proof as anything.

I like pretty much everything about TiddlyWiki except the fact that saving the files can be a challenge. I use it for various project notes and logs, but mostly I use it for my wiki at rudimentarylathe.wiki. TiddlyWiki is an amazing, powerful, flexible, fun bit of software.
